Here is what i have so far.
Wal-Mart is one of America’s favorite places to shop. Everyday tons of people prefer Wal-Mart for its low prices. There is something, however, that they don’t know. They may be promoting a greedy business that will someday destroy the economy. They are undermining small businesses. They underpay their employees and offer them little benefits.
Everybody loves low prices right? They are affordable, convenient and, low prices are more economically efficient by buying in bulk. Wal-Mart, founded by Sam Walton in 1962 started out in Rogers, Arkansas and is now the worlds biggest corporation. They are best known for their low prices, accounting for 30% of all daily household staples-sales such as toothpaste, shampoo, paper towels, ect… They’re low prices are still decreasing constantly and act as a dangling worm from a fishing hook, luring unsuspecting customers into their trap. “With annual sales of more than $288 billion, Wal-Mart netted $10.3 billion in 2004 profits, more than twice the profits of its leading retail competitors combined, according to the company's most recent annual reports” (When Wal-Mart Moves In). Their low prices are bait to drive people to buying from them, trying to put all other businesses out of business due to their lack of ability to compete with the low prices of Wal-Mart. In less than 7 years Wal-Mart has made $300 billion and they currently have 43 superstores open. They open in small communities and then close after they have defeated all competition. Ten years earlier they caused 20 store failures, and 185 ten years later. For every one Wal-Mart superstore that opens, two local grocery stores close as a result. The anti Wal-Mart movement was half a step behind them and were able to defeat them in two locations. The only location that managed to defeat Wal-Mart before they even opened was the small town of Greenfield, Massachusetts.
If anyone suffers from Wal-Mart more than anyone, it’s the employees. To be employed at Wal-Mart is not worth it and a waste of time. Karen Olsson writes in an article about a 22 year old woman named Jennifer McLaughlin who lives with her boyfriend and year old son and works for a Wal-Mart store in Paris, Texas. She’s only one of many employees, however she does many jobs on just one shift alone such as operating a register, retrieving something off a shelf with the forklift or locate and stock items in different apartments. Yet McLaughlin is only paid $16,800 a year, and she claims that she’s called high paid. This is not enough to survive alone without a second job, let along for McLaughlin to support herself and her son. As if that was not enough, Wal-Mart’s plan takes away $85 of her $550 weekly payment and many of the workers are on Medicaid because the company does not provide health care. According to CEO Lee Scott, why should the company provide basic health coverage for employees when, heck, the American taxpayer can pick it up? He said to reporters that Wal-Mart’s health care was so obsolete that they were better off relying on the state. McLaughlin’s boyfriend Eric Johnson then began to work there as a Cashier, being paid $5.75 an hour. He was soon promoted but not given a raise. Basically they are a greedy business that “underpay their workers below the minimum wage, of $5.15 nationally, $6.75 in California which has declined more than 20% un real terms since 1980. outsiders estimate Wal-Mart’s minimum pay as $8 and hour to it's hundreds of entry level workers. so that they haven't enough to barely support a family. A store in Oregon was found guilty in December of making employees work extra hours with no extra pay. Wal-Mart is also accused of being sexist for not giving 700,000 women promotion payments. Workers for more than 28 states are currently boycotting Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart has tried to fight back but has failed. They employ more people in the united states - 1.2 million -than any other institution except the federal government, which with that kind of reach, it essentially sets the starting wage for millions of other nations. Its famous squeeze on supplier farms pushes companies like proctor and gamble to manufacture more of their products in Mexico, China, and other low wage nations. It's low prices enable shoppers to buy more goods but can contribute to the bankruptcy of both main street shops and nationwide chains like toy retailer and FAO inc. and Kmart.” (Lichtenstein).
Lee Scott, is announcing that he is about to begin the “Wal-Mart’s jobs and opportunity Zones” initiative. In two years, over 50 new stores will be built in high crime rate and unemployed neighborhoods that will create thousands of new jobs according to Scott.
“‘Wal-Mart has never been afraid to invest in communities that are overlooked by other retailers. Where those businesses see difficulty, we see opportunity. That is who Wal-Mart has always been, and that is who we remain today,” Scott says in prepared remarks. “This is a commitment to reach beyond our stores, to further engage the community, and to offer an even greater economic boost to people and neighborhoods that need Wal-Mart the most.’”( quote from Scott).
Personally, I think Lee Scott is so clueless. This is not going to do any good, its just a waste of time. a family. It’s the people that already work at Wal-Mart that need help not the people without jobs. It’s like he’s completely ignoring the real issues here. Wal-Mart offers bad jobs. The people aren’t paid what they deserve for their hard work, and are never given raises.
